The Bhasma Aarti at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain stands out as a singularly unique and spiritually powerful ritual, capturing the profound essence of Hindu devotion. What is the Bhasmarti?

Bhasmarti is a two-hour-long ritual where sacred ash made from dried cow dung is offered to the deity, symbolizing purity and the cyclical nature of life. The ceremony involves the chanting of Vedic mantras and is marked by powerful vibrations, creating an atmosphere of deep spiritual energy.

Entry and Participation Guidelines

Registration Requirements

  • Pre-Registration: Advance registration is mandatory for attending the Bhasmarti. This can be done online through the official temple website or at designated counters at the temple.
  • Identification: Carry a valid ID proof when registering and while entering the temple. Foreign nationals should bring their passports.
  • Dress Code: Only men wearing dhotis and women in sarees or salwar kameez are allowed. Western attire and leather items are strictly prohibited.

Entry Timings

  • Arrival Time: Devotees must arrive at least an hour before the Aarti begins, around 3 AM, to complete security checks and get seated.
  • Gate Opening: The temple gates open at 2:30 AM for the Bhasmarti, and entry is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Seating Arrangements

  • Nandi Mandapam: The closest to the sanctum, accommodates around 100 devotees.
  • Mandapams: Ganesh Mandapam and Kartikeya Mandapam provide additional viewing spaces for up to 500 devotees.
  • Barricades: Seating beyond the Nandi Hall, providing a clear view but a bit farther from the sanctum.

Restrictions

  • Garbhagriha Access: Entry into the Garbhagriha (inner sanctum) is strictly prohibited during the Bhasmarti
  • Electronics: Mobile phones, cameras, and other electronic devices are not allowed inside the temple premises during the ceremony.
  • Prohibited Items: Any form of baggage, food, or drinks cannot be taken inside.

Conduct During the Bhasmarti

Silence and Reverence

  • Chanting: Follow the chants and maintain silence otherwise to preserve the sanctity of the ritual.
  • Seated Participation: Devotees must remain seated and refrain from moving around during the Aarti.

Offering Protocols

  • Bhasma Offering: Only the priests are authorized to offer the bhasma to the deity. Devotees are not allowed to make personal offerings during the Bhasmarti.
  • Prasad: Devotees can receive prasad after the completion of the Aarti.

Post-Bhasmarti Procedures

  • For offline Bhasmarti booking, you need to apply before one day.
  • Application for admission will be based on the seats or space available.
  • Application for Bhasmarti will be accepted only up to availability, after that no applications shall be entertained.
  • The list shall be declared at 5:00 pm and admission SMS shall be distributed at 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm.
  • Priorty shall be based upon "first come first get" basis.
  • Every applicant shall have to produce ID card with photo ID proof. PAN card not allow.
  • During Bhasmarti, the devotees shall not offer milk but only Water.
  • During Bhasmarti, no devotee shall be permitted in corridor.
  • After Bhasmarti is over and center Santarem (Garbh Grah) is closed no devotee or visitor shall be given or receive "panchamrita".
  • Only after the riniging of the 1st bell of Lord Mahakal, devotees shall enter center Santarem (Garbh Grah).
  • Permitted devotees shall vacant immediately after ritual of "Jalabhishek".
  • During the ritual of "Jalabhishek", ladies and gents should adorn saree and dhoti or sola respectively.
  • Please bear in mind that all the devotees have only 5 min during "Jalabhishek".
  • Only devotees who have the permission shall enter center Santarem (Garbh Grah).
  • In the event of any violation of above stated rules, the "Permission or Admission" shall be deemed "Cancelled".
  • Do not use polythine bags for offering milk or water to Lord Mahakaleshwer.
  • In the Bhasmarti Rules, changes are possible.
